In the last few years, some countries have started limiting social media use for children. For example, Australia and France have introduced strict rules to control how and when kids can use social media.

But why are governments taking such serious steps?

The main reason is simple β€” children need protection.

First, mental health problems among teenagers are increasing. Many students spend hours on apps like Instagram and TikTok. On these platforms, they see edited photos, luxury lifestyles, and unrealistic beauty standards. Slowly, they start comparing themselves. This often leads to low confidence, stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Second, social media is designed to be addictive. Endless scrolling, short videos, and constant notifications keep children hooked. Young minds are still developing, so they find it harder to control screen time. Instead of playing outside, reading books, or talking to family, many children spend several hours every day on their phones. This affects their sleep, studies, and overall growth.

Another big problem is online safety. Cyberbullying is very common. Some children are bullied publicly through comments or messages. There is also the risk of online predators and harmful content. Many kids are simply too young to handle such situations wisely.

Because of these reasons, some governments believe it is better to restrict access until children are mature enough to use social media responsibly.

Now the question is β€” should India also think about this?

India has one of the largest student populations in the world. Smartphones are easily available, and many children start using social media at a very young age. If this continues without proper rules, we may see more mental health problems, poor academic performance, and serious addiction issues in the future.

This does not mean technology is bad. Social media can be useful for learning and communication. But there must be limits. Strong age verification, parental controls, and digital education in schools can help. If needed, stricter laws can also be considered.

In the end, the goal is not to punish children. The goal is to protect their childhood, their focus, and their future.

It is time to seriously think about what is more important β€” unlimited screen time or healthy young minds.
